What is the proper ratio of tea tree oil to carrier oil to use for toenail fungus? The usual recommendation is to dilute tea tree oil in a carrier oil like coconut oil, using 1 part tea tree oil to 10 parts carrier oil.

Pure tea tree oil should always be diluted in a carrier oil before applying it to the skin.

For toenail fungus, a safe and effective dilution ratio is:

  • 1 part tea tree essential oil

  • 10 parts carrier oil

Some examples:

  • 5 drops tea tree oil

  • 1 teaspoon (about 50 drops) carrier oil

  • 3 drops tea tree oil

  • 2 teaspoons (about 100 drops) carrier oil

  • 10 drops tea tree oil

  • 2 tablespoons (about 300 drops) carrier oil

Carrier oils like coconut, jojoba, almond, olive or grapeseed oil help dilute and deliver the tea tree oil into the nail bed safely. They also prevent skin irritation.

Start with a lower concentration like a 1:10 ratio when first using tea tree oil topically. Monitor for any reactions. You can later increase the strength slightly by adjusting to a 1:5 dilution if well-tolerated.

Always do a patch test on a small area of skin before wider application. Never apply undiluted essential oils directly to skin or nails. Use caution if you have sensitive skin. Proper dilution is key for safe and effective use of potent tea tree oil. Consult a doctor before use if pregnant, breastfeeding or taking medications.
