Should I Buy A Kia Niro PORTABLE

As we briefly touched on in the intro, the 2021 Kia Niro benefits from a brand-new, more advanced cruise control system that is directly linked with the Niro's GPS navigation system. It comes on the Touring Special Edition and the line-topping EX Premium. This feature is unique in that it comes with the ability to read traffic signs as well as setting a safe driving speed. The EX Premium also comes with the new wireless smartphone app integration set-up for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Standard across the line-up is the rear occupant alert. While an overhauled Niro should come in the next few years (and probably feature some styling cues from Kia's HabaNiro concept car), the only updates being made right now revolve around the tech features.

Aside from the rear window bordering on the smaller side, outward visibility is clear. A back-up camera and blind spot monitoring system can help you negate that awkward rear window, and the blind spots themselves are somewhat small. Generally speaking, drivers should have clear lines of view fore, aft, and to the sides.

The 2021 Honda Insight is one of the stand-out hybrids for the model year. Despite having a gas engine that can sound a little rough at times, the cabin is otherwise well-muted and should feel very familiar to anyone who has driven an Accord or Civic before. Spacious and refined, Honda knows how to design a cozy cabin. You also get a swift acceleration that beats the Niro and the Prius.

The outgoing Niro made its debut in 2017, and while there's still a lot to like with that car, it was feeling a bit bland compared to newer, more stylish rivals. This full redesign aims to fix that image, and if newer Kia models like the EV6, K5 sedan and Telluride SUV are any indication, the latest Niro should be plenty strong.

If you're looking for a cheap-to-run family SUV, the Kia Niro has always been a solid choice. But now it's genuinely desirable, with bold looks and a more classy interior. We reckon a lot of buyers should also consider the electric Kia Niro EV but, if you're not quite ready for pure-electric power, the Kia Niro is an excellent choice.

If you're in the market for a hybrid SUV, you should also be looking at the latest Honda HR-V, as well as the Toyota C-HR and maybe the Renault Arkana. The Nissan Qashqai is now available as a hybrid, too (although it takes a slightly unusual approach to hybrid power and it's slightly bigger than the Kia Niro), while you may also want to look at the Kia Sportage.

Kia has only released pricing for the Niro hybrid and PHEV so far. The hybrid is starting to arrive in dealerships now; the PHEV and EV will follow. The hybrid starts at $27,785 (all prices include $1,295 destination) in base LX trim and runs up to $36,085 for the SX Touring. Those prices should make the Niro competitive with rivals such as the soon-to-arrive Toyota Corolla Cross, though the latter is available with AWD.

The aforementioned numbers are, I should note, specific to the FE, since it's lighter than the more fully equipped trim levels. Step up to the EX model and the economy drops to 49 mpg combined while the fully loaded (and, honestly, much better-looking) Touring model drops to just 43 combined mpg. So, I can sort of see why Kia sent us the stripped-down model. Still, it's a bit annoying to know that potential buyers who want a bit more creature comfort will not only pay more up front, but also more in fuel over the life of the vehicle.

We only got a brief taste of the PHEV and, because of the logistics involved with first drive events (we doubt you care), cannot report how it drives in all-electric mode. With the electric range at 0, it unsurprisingly drove like the hybrid. With range left, the gas engine will still kick on should you lay on the throttle as it does in the Sorento Plug-in Hybrid. It would behave most of the time as an EV, though, meaning the Niro PHEV is a good choice for those with short commutes and without a second-car alternative for longer road trips (although the smaller cargo capacity puts a damper on that).

But that assumption would be incorrect. The Kia Niro EV has a slightly longer base-model range than the EV6. It has a little extra room thanks to the lack of sloped roofline. And it has that important slightly lower price tag. Most people, however, should spend that extra cash on the EV6.

Why you should buy the Juicebox 25ft Electric Vehicle ChargerIf you've been reading up on how to charge your electric car at home, you'll notice Juicebox gets a mention. Its Level 2 chargers are more powerful than Level 1 so you can refill your battery quicker. With the Juicebox 25ft Electric Vehicle Charger, you can expect up to six times faster charging than with the charger that came with your car. Universal compatibility means it works with all TVs on the market today and in the future, including Teslas thanks to a commonly used adapter.

The K5 is the rebranded version of the Kia Optima midsize sedan. With its broad-shouldered stance and chiseled lines, this car looks sportier than competing family sedans such as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. The Kia K5 provides solid utility, with more cargo space than the rival Subaru Legacy. All-wheel drive is offered for those facing slick roads. And the K5's cabin is home to attractive design and spacious accommodations.

I love Kia for the fact that while they are laser focused on making practical cars with tons of value, they haven't lost sight of the fact that you should want to actually still love driving your car. Too many sedans are simply boring and WAY too many hybrids and EVs look and drive like you bought a hybrid - not just a great car that happens to get some crazy miles per gallon.

With a 64.8-kWh battery, Kia is estimating that the Niro can travel 253 miles between charges. This would be an improvement on the previous gen's 239-mile range, although the official EPA rating has yet to be announced. While not groundbreaking, this should be sufficient for consumers looking to commute to and from work.

Despite the compact footprint, there's plenty of cargo space up for grabs. Sited behind the second row, there are 22.8 cubic feet of trunk space in the Kia Niro EV; a decent increase from the 19.4 cu ft found in 2022. Passengers should enjoy generous levels of comfort and space, with Kia noting the Niro EV has more occupant space and cargo room than the larger Tesla Model 3.
